How to Choose a Blog Name
A blog name has one job: help the right people find you and remember you. It doesn’t need to be clever, and it definitely doesn’t need to be perfect. Here’s a process that gets you to a solid name without spiraling into a week of second-guessing.
Start with your topic or your own name
Most blog names fall into one of a few patterns:
- Your name, plain: works well if you’re the product, like a photographer, consultant, or coach.
- Your name plus what you do: for example, “[Your Name] Creates” or “[Your Name] Bakes.”
- Topic-first: a name built around your subject, like “The Weeknight Kitchen” or “Small Studio Notes.”
- Personality or wordplay: a pun or phrase related to your niche, used when you want the name itself to signal your tone.
If you’re blogging for a business you already have, use your existing business name rather than inventing a separate blog brand. It keeps things simple and reinforces the business you’re actually trying to grow.
Keep it short and easy to say
Say your name candidates out loud to another person and ask them to spell it back to you. If they get it wrong, it’s not the right name, no matter how much you like it. The same goes for typing it: a name with unusual spelling, hyphens, or numbers is harder to find and easier to mistype.
Check availability before you fall in love with it
Before you commit to a name, check:
- Is the matching “.com” domain available?
- Is the handle available on the social platforms you actually plan to use?
- Does a quick search turn up another business or blog already using it?
You don’t need a perfect match everywhere. You do need enough consistency that people can find the same name across your domain and your main social profiles.
Avoid boxing yourself in
Be cautious with names that are too narrow. “Boston Wedding Cakes” is a problem if you move or start baking for birthdays too. A slightly broader name gives you room to grow without a rebrand later.
When you’re stuck between two or three options
Pick the one that’s easiest to say out loud and move on. Overthinking this decision is one of the most common reasons blogs never actually launch. The name matters far less than what you publish under it.
Once your name is settled, the next step is deciding where your blog will actually live: Choosing a Blogging Platform.
